Surface explores the inaccurate nature of outward perception through photography, sound and text. Considering the nexus between the medical gaze and the male gaze in relation to the female body, the series uncovers the role that gender bias plays in the stigmatization of many ‘invisible’ conditions, namely Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The photographs represent fragmented bodies and highlight areas of pain associated with these conditions. A soundscape - composed in collaboration with Ben Keene - is an intimate glimpse into the lived experience of these illnesses. Finally,
a collection of interviews highlights the voices of those living with Fibromyalgia and CFS.
